Spotlight

Style frame - Title Sequence

Project Description

This is the title sequence for the film, Spotlight. It is a biographical drama that follows the investigative journalism team of The Boston Globe as they uncover the widespread child abuse within the Catholic Church. By choosing pen-and-ink style, we used the meticulous details to represent the investigative process in the story.

Responsibilities

This is a group project, I finalized the concept and art style, and created all the linework. Special thanks to my teammates, Jiayan Xu and Bei Wang.

Concept

It was the relentless perseverance of the investigation team that ultimately led all the victims to come forward and testify. Our team chose to use evidents on the detective board and the light, which are the two core elements in the film as framing devices, to convey the theme that although the power of a single light is small, countless lights will make no place for the darkness to hide.

Full Sequence

By usding Power of Tens as a transition method, at first, the audience will be miss led with the evidence on the detective boards, then as the camera pulls further back, the audience would gradually view the whole city with thousands of lights, forming the title, Spotlight.

Design Process

The meticulous attention to detail in pen-and-ink illustrations mirrors the thoroughness required in the investigation process that ultimately exposed the scandal, strive for accuracy and precision in capturing and representing information faithfully. Detailed illustrations allow for the incorporation of symbolic elements and nuanced layers of meaning, enriching storytelling.
